Since 1985, American Heartland, Inc. operated under the business name Columbus Preferred Apartments to provide fully furnished temporary housing needs primarily to business travelers on special or long-term assignments, relocating families, and those displaced from their homes.
In 2002, Columbus Preferred Apartments’ owners and founders Gary and Vicky Smith joined forces with Marriott International, Inc. to become the first ever franchise of Marriott ExecuStay. The business has outgrown its former Columbus namesake due to the expansion into Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville and Pittsburgh but still strives to provide the same service throughout all of its locations that made it successful in Columbus.
In May of 2012, Oakwood Worldwide purchased the ExecuStay brand from Marriott International and American Heartland became a franchise of Oakwood Worldwide. That same year, Mitch Smith, the son of Gary and Vicky, became a part of the ownership group.
In January 2016, American Heartland Inc. is expanded their franchise agreement with Oakwood and operated the Oakwood and ExecuStay brands throughout Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
In March 2019, Mitch Smith became the sole owner of American Heartland. Gary and Vicky officially retired although they both continue to act as trusted advisors.
In March 2020, Oakwood Worldwide announced their intention to exit the corporate housing solutions business. As a result, American Heartland officially rebranded as Home Street Serviced Apartments while committing to providing the same excellent service that guests have experienced over the years.
